Behind the Scenes

 What is the Birmingham Zoo doing here and around the world to help ecosystems and animals? Find out during this personalized, up-close encounter with our resident animals and an Animal Care Professional who cares for them. Ages 5 and up are welcome on all Behind the Scenes Encounters. Guests 12 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Registration for any Animal Encounter ends 1 hour prior to the beginning of the encounter. Please wear PPE shoes for your safety. If you have any questions about Animal Encounter requirements, please contact our Education department at education@birminghamzoo.com or by calling 205-397-3877.  All tours will meet at the front entrance starting 15 minutes before tour time.

Please note: experiences may be changed or cancelled in order to maintain the health and well-being of our animals--our main focus at the Birmingham Zoo. Any tours that are cancelled will be refunded or rescheduled.

Tuesday Admission

Tuesday Half Price Tickets are valid for general admission only on Tuesdays.  If presented on other days of the week, purchaser agrees to pay the difference to a full price ticket. All prices are plus tax. Admission tickets are non-refundable but are date-transferable up to one year after purchase date.

Active/Retired/Veteran/Reserve Military includes spouses and dependents – must show military ID and spouse/dependent ID at admissions window to purchase discounted ticket. 

College Student must show current and valid student ID at admissions window to purchase discounted ticket.

*Onsite General Admission Tickets stop being sold one hour before Zoo closing.

**During regular hours, entry into the Zoo stops fifteen minutes before closing.

Ride Tickets

Enjoy one ride on the Protective Life Carousel, Red Diamond Express Train, or Full Moon Bar-B-Que Wild Slide!

One ticket per person per ride, ages 2 years and up. Ride tickets are for daytime operation only and are not valid for special events, such as Boo at the Zoo.

*Guests must be 4 years and 40 inches tall to ride the Wild Slide. All slide riders must have a ticket or wristband.  1 ticket equals 3 turns on the Wild Slide.  Wild Slide is weather dependent.

*Children under 2 years old must be accompanied by a paying adult on the train and carousel.  Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a paying adult chaperone on the train.  

All Adventure

*Can be purchased only on weekends, Saturday & Sunday with special holiday purchase on Labor Day - Monday, September 2.

Special Saturdays Attendance

Homeschool at the Zoo: 1st-9th Grade

Registration is for a full year of monthly classes from September to April. These enjoyable and educational classes may include live animal demonstrations, interactive discussions, hands-on nature exploration, and guided tours of the Zoo. Our program is designed to supplement your home curriculum by creating connections with science and the natural world in an engaging and interactive environment.

Teacher's Night at the Zoo

Enjoy a night out at the Birmingham Zoo designed just for educators! This one of a kind evening will feature ambassador animals, examples of new and improved program opportunities, a special keeper chat, door prizes and more! (2.5) STIPD credits available. Food and drinks will be provided.

Family Night Hike: Special Saturday

Special Saturdays

Special Saturdays is a series of zoo-based learning experiences for children and adolescents with cognitive or physical disabilities whose opportunities for engagement in community programs might otherwise be limited. Caregivers must attend all classes with participants to provide behavioral support and meet child-specific needs. There is no charge for the Special Saturdays program. Space is limited to 12 students per class. Caregivers must attend all classes with participants to provide behavioral support and meet child-specific needs. One registration covers student and caregiver. 

Classes are held the second Saturday of each month. Morning classes are for ages 8-13 and afternoon classes are for ages 14 and up.
